ShopSocial Raises $1.2 Million For Its “Commerce As A Social Service” Idea [TechCrunch.com]

“Basically, ShopSocial enables brands and merchants to include buttons within display advertising units or on product pages that enables people to share and recommend products and services with their friends (via email, Facebook or Twitter).”

I view this as an affiliate marketing play with a social media overlay. People are going to get paid for “word of mouth” advertising. It is hard to imagine both sides of this: huge potential to have products “go viral” with the incentive for referrers to make money; the potential for people to start “oversharing” and hence simply creating “noise” that breaks trust and credibility with their networks. I’ll be interested to see how this plays out…if I was a betting man, I would say that it will only create confusion and distraction in the marketplace.
