Dear [BeachBody, Plexus, Arbonne, R+F, Advocare, IDLife, other MLM] business owner friends,
First off, I miss you – the “real you” since I feel like I’m only seeing the “business you” anymore. Can I ask a favor? Can you stop going all, “Ron ‘But wait, there’s more!’ Popeil” on me?
I signed up to be your friend. Somewhere along the way I feel like I became a mark. With the holiday season upon us, the sales pitches have reached epic proportions. You’re one of 5, 10, 17, 26, 42, heck, a gazillion people pitching me. And, I hate it.
Go ahead and take a look at your profile: Have you become a “one dimensional” friend by over-posting about your business? Think about it from my perspective: I want to see your [kids, parents, sister, brother, interesting article, cool movie, TBT, cool concert, charity event, *any* real life event] and not just the business. This makes our friendship and connection cool and vibrant. Consistent pitching, not so much. And consider that I have the amplification of lots of friends doing cool MLM businesses, which means more pitches. What percentage of your posts are “you” and what percentage is the “business you”? C’mon, at least give me a few funny cat videos! ๐
It’s not that I’m not stoked for you and your success. I am! You know that. I love people taking risks and creating success. Heck, as I look around my house, we’ve bought (and re-ordered) product from just about every MLM: Sparks, R+F, Arbonne, Shakeology. This isn’t about me not wanting to try, support or buy your product – very clearly we try it all – have even hosted parties. It’s not the product; it’s the constant, monotonous marketing. It’s a broken record. I know you are just following the plan of “sharing your story.” It’s boring. Imagine if I had posted pictures of every one of the 18,000+ homes we rehabbed the last few years. You would have killed me!I would have killed me.
Everything has a time and a place. There are Facebook pages for people to OPT-IN to hear about all the wonderful, life-changing events, products and success stories for the [fat, out of shape, newly skinny, cancer-free, nutrition deprived, blemished skin] people. Heck, even Mark Zuckerberg announced he setup a page for those people interested in the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The dude invented Facebook. Let’s follow his lead.
You are so much more than your business, but it seems like that is all I ever see of you. At least, it is all you’re sharing anymore. Just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should be done. Be judicious. Be smart. Be courteous. Be you.
So, please consider taking your MLM pitch to a Facebook page. And, hopefully, my smart, funny and interesting friend will surface again.
Thanks!
Your Friend,
Jerry
PS – I still love you.
